Fokana-Fomaa unity: Chances fade
Sunday, October 26th, 2008Fokana-Fomaa: Is unity still possible?
Friday, October 10th, 2008The Fokana has sent a message to Fomaa president John Titus with a few suggestions for unity, it is learnt. The letter asks to reach a tentative agreement before October 20. So only a few more days remain.
The Fomaa election is scheduled for November 15 and Fokana election is scheduled for November 22. A decision is needed urgently.
But what are the chances for unity? The letter agrees to support the next convention (2010) in West Coast. Also, it agrees to give the posts of president, treasurer, and joint secretary to Fomaa. In return, Fokana asks for the posts of vice president, secretary and joint treasurer.
The letter asks to reciprocate the gesture for the 2012 convention. The venue will be in East Coast for 2012. The Fokana should get the posts of president, tresurer and joint treasurer. Vice president, general secretary and joint treasurer posts will be given to Fomaa.
Another demand is that a decision about these teams should be arrived at this year itslef without an election.
As for the national committee posts, it would be divided equally.
After an agreement is reached, the proposed elections of both groups should be canceled.
Another demand is that all legal cases should be withdrawn by the concerned parties.
If there is an agreement on these things, 5-6 people from each group can meet with mutually agreed moderators to chalk out the final settlement.
Fokana’s current constitution and registration will remain the same, the letter notes.
After speaking to both groups the impression gained was that both wants unity, but they are not sure how to bring it.
One contention is that there is no mention about the Trustee Board, which has assumed much power recently. TS Chacko and another member will retire with the next general body. There will be only two vacancies. If there is no equal power in the board, it will create problems, Fomaa leaders think.
Fomaa leaders are also worried about continuing the current Fokana as it is. The Fokana has not filed its accounts with the IRS for many years. As a result, Fokana has no non-profit status. Moreover, a large amount as penalty may be paid to IRS.
Then the issue of court cases and pending claims. Two cases have already decided against Fokana. The total value for them will come to about $100,000. (from NJ conevtntion time)
In such a situation, the organization can form a new corporation to avoid the liability. Only cosmetic changes needed in the name. It can be incorporated in another state also. Currently it is in Maryland.
But Fokana leaders do not want to create the impression that leaders of both groups are going to disslove both organizations to form another one. The cosmetic name change can be decided at a later stage without attarcting a hue and cry from the public.
Fomaa leaders feel confident about the court cases this time. So they are not sure about withdrawing them also at this juncture. They also feel that the popular support is growing for them. They cite the examples of Onam celebrations and the huge support for it to the newly formed Malayalee Association of Rockland County, Malayalee Samajam in Queens etc. The Westchester Malayalee Association also decided to support both groups, a big change they claim.
Things are still in a fluid state. Nobody is sure about the chances of unity yet. Moreover, is it posible to discuss the suggestions at various levels and reach a decision in a few days?
Let us wait and see.
Financial crisis and you

Comment:
The first article here (by me) was published on the day the financial markets were showing signs of near collapse. The 700 billion dollar bailout emergency announcement averted a collapse that day. Taking that decision is what I had referenced in the message as crucial. However, even that decision and other measures have not stabilized the world financial system. Most Malayalees don’t know this:we are in for some serious mess in this country. FOKANA/FOMAA may become irrelevant then.
Please keep tuned to financial information. Those over 60 may not be able to recover from this financial mess – 401 Ks have lost substantial value and will continue to lose its value unless something is done. Kneel down and pray. Next two days will be critical. Soon we may find out that living in India is better and decide to return.
Can this site start a thread on financials?
Regards.
